A Charming Summer Cabin Situated On Its Very Own Little Island
Date: November 20, 2019
Author: Jennie Taylor
Project Ö (where Ö means island in Swedish) was completed earlier this year and brings us the ultimate summer retreat. It consists of a small cabin and a workshop which were built on a 5-acre island on the edge of Archipelago National Park in Finland. The owners purchased the entire island and turned it into their own little slice of paradise, a place where they can relax, unwind and spend time with friends and family during the summer. Although both the cabin and the workshop are small (70 square meters of space in total) they can comfortably sleep up to 10 people.

This summer cabin has its own little island filled with trees and beautiful vegetationThe cabin is small and modest but also self-sufficient which makes it pretty amazing
The small island on which this beautiful summer cabin was built is entirely self-sufficient. It uses solar power and filtered sea water and has a sauna stove which gives hot running water and heats the spaces. It would be fair to consider this an off-the-grid retreat especially since it can only be reached by boat. The cabin and workshop follow a traditional Finnish aesthetic, featuring gabled roofs, long eaves and extended gutters.
Inside all the spaces are small and cozy. This is the kitchen and dining areaThe cabin and the workshop are situated close to the edge of the island from where they can enjoy the amazing viewsLarge windows open up the internal spaces and reveal different views of the surroundingsThe living area has a ceiling-mounted fireplace and huge windows on two adjacent sidesThe vertical cladding on the walls helps the small spaces seem taller and also adds warmth to the interior design
They also have vertical cladding inside and out and enjoy a strong bond with their natural surroundings. Large windows reveal the mesmerizing views and help the interior spaces seem less small. Ultimately, the designers wanted to make this retreat as compact as possible without compromising functionality or comfort.
The cabin rises above the rocky terrain, featuring this floating deck that extends around it on all sidesThe cabin and the workshop have very similar designs, featuring modern designs infused with traditional detailsThe gabled roof suits the cabin perfectly, adding lots of character to its already charming design
