The Best Mattress for a Small Bedroom

The Best Mattress for a Small Bedroom

The best mattresses of tomorrow will be: Air Mattress Systems. Why not? Air mattress systems are designed with your health and sleep in mind. This is a new concept in the mattress business and it has its enthusiasts singing the praises. All-foam mattocks are great but what about those that prefer a more all-natural, softer feel? Well, that’s where the Air Mattress Systems comes in; they have two sets of orthopedically supportive steel coils under the foam for springy comfort, and a specially formulated soft top for that old-fashioned but still pleasingly firm feel.

Air Mattress Systems uses a patented technology called TempurPedic technology. This patented technology allows air to circulate throughout the mattress. The secret? Air that is specifically directed where you need it most, which is the center of the mattress, rather than air leaking out and collecting at the edges.
The Best Mattress for a Small Bedroom
The Secrets of the Best MATTRESS and the Air Mattress Systems begins with a revolutionary foam called TempurPedic Foam. This foam is superior in many ways, especially in regards to durability. A high-density polyfoam top layer surrounds the coil and provides additional support for those nights when you really want to rock. The layer also creates a firm, safe base for your mattress to lay on, as well as adding additional energy-absorbing and heat-conducting material throughout the mattress, to keep you cool and comfortable.

The TempurPedic foams allow air to circulate through the entire mattress, which means a higher quality and more comfortable mattress. The secret? Since the coils are sealed and air travels freely around them, there are no defects in the spring design. This results in a better night’s sleep, allowing you to wake up refreshed every morning, instead of feeling as though you spent all night tossing and turning.

Sleep Number is another mattress to try, which uses memory foam to provide support and reduce pressure points while you sleep. One of the best things about this product is the ability to have a sleep trial. By using the sleep trial you get to see how your body reacts to the mattress. You can return back to the store if you aren’t impressed and decide whether or not you want to purchase the mattress. If you do like it, you can then purchase the bed and have a proper sleep trial.
The Best Mattress for a Small Bedroom
Perhaps the Best MATTRESS of all is the air purifier. This ingenious invention replaces bacteria and mold growth that occurs naturally inside the human body with air that is completely odorless and harmless. With this special coating, you are provided with the added benefit of allowing fresh air to circulate around your body while you sleep. This helps you to remain cool and refreshed throughout the entire night. This also helps to keep your room cool in the summer months, which is something that many people simply do not have enough of during the summer months.

The Best MATTRESS for a medium sized person is the Biofinity Pro Tempurpedic Mattress. This is perfect for a person who weighs around two hundred and fifty pounds, because it provides firmness in a medium range. If you weigh less than this, or you have arthritis, you might want to look into a different option.

The Best MATTRESS for a small person is the Standard Collection by Best Matress. These mattress sizes are very comfortable, and they are also rated by many consumer agencies. Because these sleepers are very comfortable and relatively easy to maneuver, they are ideal for people who sleep on their side, or who suffer from back pain. This is one of the few mattress sizes that are rated by most consumer agencies, and the company has spent a lot of time and money on this product.

Bed Styles You Can Purchase For Your Home

BEDS

Before you go shopping for your new bed, you need to decide what kind of beds you want: wooden beds, metal beds, or do-it-yourself, pre-built, or handmade (rustic) furniture. There are many types of beds available, and each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. For instance, a rustic, wood-sided bed will give your room a natural, old-fashioned feel. But, if you plan to use it in an adult bedroom, a metal bed will be the most practical choice.
Rustic beds are very popular in the middle-west and in the southwest, where people like their landscape and rural feel. In addition, beds made from wood, such as wooden guest rooms, are a big hit with retirees in upstate New York and southern Pennsylvania. They are also becoming quite popular in California, where they fit well into the “ranch” style of decor. These styles, especially those that are shaped like a log cabin, work great in guest rooms.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor shabby chic boho beds

Rustic bedroom furniture comes in a variety of styles. If you prefer a more natural look, choose a bed shaped like a log cabin. Or, if you want a modern look, choose a bed shaped like a contemporary piece of furniture. The woods used in these beds can be stained in natural colors of pine or cedar, although mahogany and rosewood are also very popular choices.

The traditional look of a rustic bed is one shaped in such a way that it takes up the entire wall. Two twin size twin beds are usually put together to make a “pod” formation, which gives the appearance of two independent sleeping chambers. However, the size of the bed will depend upon how many guests are sleeping over. It is important to choose a bed that matches the rest of the furniture in the guest rooms, or else the overall look may be disjointed. Also, wooden guest beds that are shorter in length than the frame will make the room look bigger.

Another type of bed that can be used in guest rooms is the couch bed. This is a three-seater sofa that can be pulled up into a bed when not in use. Couch beds can be made from a variety of materials, including leather, vinyl, and metal. You can even find convertible couch beds, which can be easily converted into a bed when not in use. Some convertible couch beds have upholstered slipcovers, while others have cushions.

King size Beds

Dakotadave.com Home Decor shabby chic boho beds
When choosing new beds for your guest rooms, you should consider the look of the room in which you will place the bed. There are many different types of beds that are available. In addition to the traditional wooden frames, you can also purchase metal framed beds. There are many different types of wood that can be used in the construction of these frames. You can find oak, pine, cedar, and several other types of wood in many different styles. When choosing a style of bed frame, it is important to choose one that fits into the overall design of the room.

One option that is available is faux leather beds. These beds come with a faux leather finish, and there is also a faux fur option if you would like to add a little more warmth to the room. If you purchase an air mattress in this style, you may also be able to get a discount on the mattress. However, these air mattresses are not as comfortable as a specially made foam bed, and a faux leather frame will be heavier and will take up more room.

One of the most common bed styles in the world is the canopy bed. These beds are usually made of wood and supported by a metal frame. You can find a variety of wood types including mahogany, rosewood, maple, and walnut. The most popular color for these beds is either black or brown.

Beds with storage

Beds with storage are useful for many reasons. If you have a small apartment or dorm room, you can save on space by keeping a bed with storage built in. If you have a child that has excessive clutter in their bedroom, a bed with storage is an excellent way to combat that problem. Or if you have a lot of older items that are collecting dust, a bed with storage is also ideal for storing those items until they are needed again. No matter what your reasons are, there are many options out there for beds with storage. Some beds with storage drawers have a sliding drawer mechanism, which allows you to slide the drawer open whenever you need to use the storage. This means that you never have to worry about getting clothes tangled up in the drawer and you never have to worry about pulling out the entire bed frame to dust the mattress or change sheets. Dakotadave.com Home Decor shabby chic boho beds

Some beds with storage drawers also feature side drawer doors which allow you to access the drawers without opening the door on the side. This is a nice feature for those who like to store extra items at their bed and who want to be able to access the drawers without opening the whole thing. If you are looking for a bed with storage drawers that has clean lines and that is easy to clean, then a modern frame such as a European style bed frame may be what you are looking for. The clean lines of an antique bed with storage drawers blend perfectly with clean lines of today’s furniture. Some people prefer the look of antique furniture with modern conveniences, and there is certainly a lot of truth to that idea. In the same way that you would like a classic oak piece of furniture to look traditional, you want your modern bed frame to look as though it was made yesterday. This is one area where you definitely want the help of a professional to do the job right.

Queen size beds

If you have a family and want the space to accommodate two people, a queen sized bed can be the perfect solution. These beds are much larger than your standard single size bed and provide plenty of space for those extra people. This also makes it possible for you to have more room in your bedroom so everyone has somewhere to sleep comfortably. Queen sized beds come in many different styles. You can choose the traditional type with a full headboard and footboard as well as the newer types that are designed as simply as a bed with a headboard and a footboard. Either way, these beds will provide you with the support you need while providing you with the space you desire. The cost of these beds will vary depending on the style you choose. The traditional wooden queen-sized bed can cost anywhere from $300 – thousands of dollars, while the more modern metal and plastic bed will only cost you around a few hundred dollars. Before you purchase any bed you will need to determine how much space you need. Once you have this figure out you can then begin looking for beds that will accommodate all of your needs. It is important to make sure the bed you choose fits in the space you have as well as providing you with all of the comfort and support you desire.

Divan Beds

Divan beds are very comfortable and can help a person to get rid of back aches in one fell swoop. The divan beds of today have built in space to accommodate a person’s feet from the base of the divan up to the top. One will find that a divan has enough space so that the sleeper can comfortably lie down. Most of the divans are quite spacious and have even more storage space so that there is no need to keep finding things on top of the divan when the bed is set up. The beds are usually very attractive as well as being extremely comfortable. When one goes to buy a divan for their home, it is important to choose the right type of bed depending upon the space available in the room. Since the divan is an open weave bed, it will not be possible to place any kind of furniture or drape on the bed. When this problem is faced, then one will definitely want to invest in a bed that is made of a solid wood like oak. One can also use the divan beds for extra sleeping space during travel as well. Since the divan has the ability to expand, one can lay a couple of divans across the bottom of a double bed and thus make use of the extra space in the room for additional sleeping accommodations. The bed will be used during the night as well for napping and thus is extremely comfortable and convenient. One will also find that these beds are not very expensive and thus one can buy many at a time without thinking about overspending on them. A divan is a great investment and can also be used for multiple purposes.

Rustic Beds

Rustic beds are an excellent choice for bedrooms and living rooms, as they perfectly complement the style of any home, lodge or cabin. Beds constructed from the finest hardwoods and hand-crafted hardwoods such as pine, cedar, or redwood are both functional and beautiful. The style of a rustic bed is based on the primitive artistic beauty of American Indians, who created some of the most unique and stylish furniture known to man. Rustic bed frames are typically large in size, with multiple master or bunk beds, and have few if any drawers. Rustic furniture is often decorated with wildlife prints and earth tones, and may be finished with a worn, distressed or brightly colored finish to best fit the decor of the room. When purchasing rustic furniture, it is important to remember that each piece is unique, and may come in one of many different styles including modern, traditional, southwestern or rustic. Rustic bedroom furniture often comes unfinished and should be prepared accordingly. Choosing the ideal rustic bed will allow for ample space to stretch out, while providing privacy as needed. An excellent bed should include a mattress for a restful slumber, a comfortable bed frame, and plenty of storage space. Rustic beds are available in many shapes and sizes, including single, double, queen, king and California king sizes. A good quality rustic bed can last for many years and is often made with the highest quality materials making it a great investment for your home or lodge. Rustic beds can be purchased at most large discount department stores as well as numerous online retailers. Before purchasing your new bed, however, it is important to ensure that you are purchasing the right size and style to best suit your needs.

18 Easy Backyard Projects to Make & Enjoy with the Family

Easy Backyard Projects

Easy backyard projects are made even easier with more pairs of helping hands. What are you waiting for? Round up the family and pick a DIY project to start off with!

1. Pallet Planters

I’ve got tons of creative DIY pallet planters you and your family can choose from! Whether you’re in the mood for something to save floor space or something to upcycle, this roundup is the one for you!

Tip: When making a chicken wire planter, carefully mold the chicken wire into a cone shape for an easier project.

2. Tiki Torches

|

These tiki torches make great accent pieces for luaus and barbecues. A great tip though; reduce potential spills by using a funnel when pouring the fuel into the bottles.

3. Easy Mason Jar Lanterns

Looking for another craft to use your mason jars in? Why not turn them into lanterns you can hang from the patio?

Tip: Remember to twist the ends of the wire tightly to prevent the lantern from falling to the ground.

4. Outdoor Drapes

|

Give your backyard ample shade by placing in a rod of outdoor drapes.

Tip: Don’t stress too much about cutting perfect circles for the holes on your drapes. The grommets will help cover up any mistakes.

By the way, you can totally use the grommets as a stencil for your circles too!

5. Tire Teeter Totter

|

Upcycle an old tire into a tire teeter totter with this tutorial.

I’ve got to say, the hardest part of making the teeter totter was cutting the tire in half. Luckily, I had Dave help me with this project.

Dave’s Tip: Cut off the corners of your seat board and sand it well to get rid of sharp edges and possible splinters.

6. Tree Swing

When making a DIY tree swing, it’s best to make sure the weight limit of your rope is big enough for a workable swing. Use a double running bowline knot to tie the swing to the high branch.

7. Garden Stepping Stones

I love how these garden stepping stones are fully customizable. That being said, you can choose to imprint the hands of your family, add mosaic tiles, or even stamp some letters on, the choice is yours.

8. Collapsible Fence Table

This collapsible fence table is a great way of adding a table without sacrificing space.

The secret lies in attaching the surface of the table to a wall. Once attached, you can lift up or collapse the table as needed.

Dave’s Tip: Use tee hinges to screw the table board onto the fence.

9. Outdoor Seating

|

I love how the concrete blocks are painted in a bright color. They help give a pop of vibrancy to the backyard.

Start by making sure the ground is level and place your concrete blocks in place. I recommend using four blocks on each side and having two additional layers on top of each side.

Tip: Add a cushion on top of the wood frame for extra comfort.

10. Seashore Wind Chimes

|

Show off the lovely seashells you’ve collected in your last family beach trip when you DIY a wind chime. Simply punch two small holes on either side of the seashells, insert the string through the holes, and then tie the string to a stick of driftwood.

11. Hammock

|

Make a hammock with some cord and a few yards of fabric. This tutorial has both a sew and no-sew method.

If you choose to do the latter, make sure the cords are tightly tied.

12. Fairy Garden

Your kids will love making this DIY fairy garden. Simply layer on a handful of sand, then position the garden accents, such as the rocks and seashells.

You can also finish off the project with a sign saying “Fairy Tide Pool” just for kicks.

13. Stick Wall Hanging

|

This project is one of the super simple backyard ideas, you wouldn’t even believe it. Start off by telling your kids to look for sticks they’d like to use for the wall hanging.

Once the sticks are gathered, paint on a design, and then tie the sticks together with some string. That’s all it takes!

14. Tower Garden Planter Bird Bath

|

Teach your kids the importance of taking care of animals by setting up a bath for the birds. You can also tell them to water the plants of the birdbath daily to teach a lesson on responsibility.

Tip: Don’t forget to tilt the pots as you insert them through the pole.

15. Garden Mirror

|

Make your backyard look more spacious by setting up a garden mirror. This easy DIY garden project upcycles a pair of broken windows for their garden mirrors, which makes it yet another upcycling project to admire!

16. Bubble Fountain

|

Fountains add such joy to a backyard. I, for one, can’t resist the gentle sounds of the water trickling from the fountain down to the edges — it’s just so calming.

See the benefits a fountain can give you and your family when you make one for your next DIY afternoon.

Dave’s Tip: Use a spur-point or dowel drill bit when drilling into the plastic pot. Also, be sure the hole you drill will fit the pump power cord for your fountain.

17. DIY Outdoor Movie Screen

|

Make movie night a weekly habit with the family with this DIY outdoor movie screen. Start by mounting the curtain hanging wire onto two trees.

Then, build your frame and then attach the sheet to the frame. Hang the framed sheet to your hanging wire with some hooks and eye screws, and secure it with bungee cords.

Tip: Build your frame according to your preferred viewing ratio.

Trendy Christmas Mantel Decor Ideas From Instagram

Now that Halloween and Thanksgiving are over it’s time to take out those lovely Christmas decorations that you’ve been itching to put on display. You might want to hold out on the Christmas tree but it’s not too early to decorate the mantel. To give you a taste of what you could put together this year we’ve gathered some Christmas mantel decor ideas from Instagram and we think you’re going to like them.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Now that’s a full mantel and just look how charming it is with all those little Christmas lights all over it. We also like the use of greenery in a not so traditional manner to create a Christmas mantel decor that stands out without being unconventional. You can follow simply2moms to find out more inspiring ideas.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

A muted color scheme and a little bit of Scandinavian-inspired charm really make this Christmas mantel decor stand out. It’s simple but not austere or too basic and makes good use of different materials, finishes and textures. The wooden beads are quirky yet simple and the hanging stockings are tastefully cozy-looking. It’s a design shared by sherylsandersdesigns.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

We also really like the snowy look on this Christmas mantel shared by velveteenandgracega. The white brick pattern creates a rustic backdrop for all the decorations, the mini Christmas trees and even the white stocking which blend in. A few bits of accent color bring out the beauty in everything.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

A few basic mantel ornaments such as candle holders, framed pictures and other similar items can be spruced up for Christmas in no time. Add some seasonal greenery, a wreath and a few Christmas-specific decorations to put together a wonderful mantel decor. Let this post from nestedsanctuary inspire you.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Of course, we can’t forget about the Christmas lights. They really change everything and you can use them to spruce up your mantel quite nicely. Add string lights to things like garlands, wreaths and those mini Christmas trees to create a fairly tale-inspired decor. It’s easy and very effective, as shown here by 2ladiesandachair.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

The reindeer head hanging above the mantel definitely seems to be the focal point of the decor but there are also plenty of other details that stand out. For example, the red pom-poms, the star and the candy cane garlands are really cute and the subtle metallic accents on the candle holders and miniature trees add a refined and chic touch to the whole setup. Follow jordecor for more beautiful ideas.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

A green garland decorated with flowers is definitely not your typical Christmas mantel decoration but it does look quite nice here. It definitely has an elegant and refined vibe and seems like a nice fit for both traditional and modern spaces. You can definitely use this as a source of inspiration for your own Christmas mantel decor. The idea comes from kellyhopterinteriors.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

If you happen to have your TV mounted above the fireplace you can’t really put much on the mantel because then you’ll obstruct the view. Stick with some greenery and place the taller ornaments such as candles and miniature trees on the sides if there’s room. You can also hang garlands and other decorations from or under the mantel. This mantel decor shared by farmcasadecastro is a good example.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

You can keep the Christmas mantel decor minimal yet still make it look festive and stylish. The snowy garland is the centerpiece of this design shared by _claudia_5. It partially hides the Merry Christmas sign but leaves enough of it visible to still let the message through and although they’re empty the candle holders add a familiar and cozy vibe to the space.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

A stone-clad fireplace is already charming enough on its own so you don’t really need to go all out to get it ready for Christmas. Add a few green clippings, some candles and Christmas ornaments and allow the backdrop to complement the decor. You can add some battery-powered string lights if you have any. Follow alf_extraterrestrial for more lovely ideas.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

The color scheme for your Christmas mantel decor can be inspired by the design of the fireplace. We got this idea from a post made by fiddleleafinteriors. Check out this whitewashed brick fireplace and the simple yet very beautiful way in which it was decorated. The garland is definitely the focal point in this case. To get a similar look you could use fake snow in a can.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

We really like how clean and playful this Christmas mantel decor shared by houseonasugarhill looks. Everything seems to fall in place perfectly and all the different vivid colors look great against the white background. The candles also add a whimsical touch to the whole ensemble.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

That recessed space is just perfect for hanging wreaths and other decorations above the mantel. Not every fireplace is designed this way though. Of course, you can still take a similar approach regardless. This Christmas mantel decor shared by sosweetlystyled makes use os a cedar garland with blue berries and dried eucalyptus and pine cones and looks really lovely.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

We all have that set of Christmas decorations that we take out every year and they give us a nice sense of comfort. You can definitely use some to decorate your mantel this Christmas. You can have items displayed all around it but try not to add too much to the design. You can find some inspiration in this post from vaughnhillhome.

The 5 Best Vacuums for Carpet

Chores aren’t exactly fun, which is why we call them chores. But it’s important to keep our personal space clean for multiple reasons, not the least of which are mental and physical health. Few can afford a maid or housekeeper, and that leaves the duty to us as the homeowner or renter. Having the right tools to make the job easier and less of a hassle is crucial to keeping up with your chores.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

One of the most overlooked tools in that arsenal is the vacuum. Most people have one, but have you ever considered how valuable your vacuum is in terms of really helping you get the job done quickly and effectively? It’s essential to find a vacuum that is great at cleaning out your carpet, so you remove all the gathered dirt, dust, and particles every time you vacuum. Otherwise, you could be wasting your money.

How to Choose

  • User reviews can give you brutal, honest truth regarding how effective a vacuum is for carpet, so you get the benefit of other people’s experience.
  • Check out the manufacturer website to learn more about the company, the components of the vacuum, and the overall specifications so you have full information for comparison.
  • Think about your home. Know how large of an area you’ll be vacuuming, whether you have pets or other conditions that could cause excess strain on the vacuum, and how often you’ll be using it.
  • Take into account cost and budget. If you don’t have a set amount you’re willing to pay, you could end up shelling out more cash than you need to.

Why Use a Vacuum?

While there are several benefits to using a vacuum, the main one is for health purposes. Carpet fibers are great at clinging to things you don’t necessarily want in your home, and without a vacuum, it can be almost impossible to clean that up. Even if you were willing to get down on your hands and knees and pick out particles, there are so many things you can’t see with the naked eye that it would be useless to try. Other forms of carpet cleaning can be intensive, expensive, or time consuming.

Related: Best 5 Upright Vacuums for All Homes

Easy Cleaning

You could possibly use a carpet rake to help clean your carpet, but those don’t get all the particles out of your carpet. In fact, the rake is more likely to stir up some of those unwelcome particles than it is to remove them as you rake the carpet back into shape. Another option is to use a carpet cleaner, but that requires moving furniture to other rooms and having time for your carpet to dry after the shampoo. Plus, it takes a lot of time and energy to do it. With a vacuum, you can quickly and effectively run a quick path over the carpet and let the suction pull all of those unwanted materials out, often taking them up through a filter, which will also help keep your carpet pile thick and healthy. Best of all, vacuums are easy to use, often lightweight these days, and don’t take long to get things back in shape.

Deep Reach

It’s important that your tool dig deep, getting all the way through the carpet to remove unwanted particles and materials. Many vacuums have multiple settings so that, with the suction power and the brushes they use, they are able to reach deep to the core of the carpet, no matter how high the carpet pile. This makes them very effective in keeping your carpet clean.

Allergy Relief

The reason your health suffers when your home isn’t clean is often due to physical ailments. The fibers in the carpet pick up everything from the dirt on your shoes to the pollen and other materials that come with you from outside. Humans shed skin, which gets into the carpet, and if you have pets, fur and dander do as well. All of this is terrible for allergies, as well as asthma, COPD, and other diseases of the lungs. Using a vacuum to make sure your carpet is as clean as possible can help relieve symptoms of these. In addition, knowing that your carpet is clean literally improves mental health, keeping you from worrying about what could be making you sick.

Top 5 Best Vacuums for Carpet Reviews

To help you narrow down the search, we’ve put together a comprehensive list of the best vacuums for carpet, complete with easy to understand information and specifications of each one.

10 Green Building Materials That Help You Save Energy, Money And The Earth

Being green and eco-friendly is the latest trend in architecture and the best one in our opinion. We’ve been using concrete for too long and we’re starting to forget that there are alternatives. Today we’re exploring those alternatives and checking out existing projects that make use of green building materials.

Rammed earth

In case you’re not familiar with this concept, rammed earth has been around for thousands of years and while some of the techniques and details might have changed over time, the base principles remain the same. Rammed earth walls feel pretty similar to concrete ones and are also sturdy. The Great Wall of WA is the longest rammed earth wall in Australia, measuring 230 meters in total and enclosing 12 residences. The wall goes along the edge of a sand dune and was created to provide accommodation for a cattle station. The residences themselves have rammed earth facades and look absolutely amazing. This was a project by Luigi Rosselli Architects.

Straw bales

Straw bales have also been used for a very long time, just like rammed earth walls. They’re an alternative to materials such as concrete, wood, stone and others. Straw bales are used to create the walls inside of a frame and they can provide great insulation. Furthermore, this is a sustainable and affordable resource. This right here is a straw bale house built to replace an old shed. It’s small but comfortable and energy-efficient thanks to its insulation. Check out its full story on diyhousebuilding.

HempCrete

Created from inner fibers of the hemp plant, HempCrete is a material comparable to concrete but with an obvious  advantage in the fact that it’s a green building material. The blocks are very lightweight and the hemp from which they’re made is a renewable resource. HempCrete is also highly insulating and airtight. regulating the temperature of the building and allowing it to be more energy-efficient.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Bamboo

Bamboo has been around for ages and recently it started to become more popular as a building material. It’s very versatile and it’s a fast-growing, renewable resource which already gives it an advantage of over concrete and other more common materials. Bamboo can also replace a variety of expensive materials, allowing you to keep the cost of your project low. Versatility is probably bamboo’s best feature. Here you can see it being used by architecture studio Vo Trong Nghia. They renovated Nocenco cafe, a rooftop venue in central Vietnam and they used bamboo to create an airy space with dramatic vaulted ceilings.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Wood logs

Wood is one of the most popular building materials on earth and wood log are especially great because they’re not processed and that means less waste. Also, logs are perfect for building cozy-looking cabins. You can use them for the entire structure, including the roof. Of course, if we’re to consider this a green building material the logs would have to come from a renewable source. Check out this charming cabin and the timelapse video of how it can build on YouTube.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Recycled plastic

Recycled plastic bricks are a thing, even if they’re not very popular. They’re lightweight and they’re made out of trash and plastic waste. You can use them just like concrete bricks to build the walls of a house and the process is super fast. This house, for example, was built in just 5 days. The plastic bricks were connected like lego pieces and that greatly simplified the whole process.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Mycelium

Mycelium is one of the most unusual building materials out there. It’s made from the root structure of fungi and mushrooms and it can grow around other materials in molds after it’s air-dried to create bricks or other types of modules. These bricks are strong and lightweight. This technique and this material can be used to create all sorts of unique and visually-interesting installations, such as these cool garden arches created by architect Carlo Ratti.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

This is the world’s first tower made from fungus, designed by architect David Benjamin and his studio, The Living. The structure is built using mycelium bricks and has a design and a structure which actually make it look like a mushroom stem. This green building material pushes the boundaries of architecture and design.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Clay

Clay is another interesting building material. It’s most commonly used to create bricks or roof tiles which give houses a nice rustic appearance. Clay is also an an ingredient used in other materials including rammed earth, plaster or ceramics. It provides stability and durability and it’s very versatile. Believe it or not, you can even build a whole house out of clay. The COB house is the perfect example. Check it out on overgrowthesystem.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Ashcrete

Ashcrete is an alternative to traditional cement. It’s made using Fly ash, a fine powder which is the byproduct of burning pulverized coal in power plants. It forms cement in the presence of water. Ashcrete can substitute concrete and can have a variety of uses. It’s strong and durable and it has the major advantage of being a green building material.

Clashing Colors and Prints – The Big No-No’s at Home

We may have our minds made up about what colors we want in our living space but some colors just DO NOT work well together. Many of these design faux pas have to do with tones of colors. While others are much more obvious. Let’s explore what color and print combinations do not look good together so you can avoid making these design mistakes in the future.

Navy Blue and Chocolate Brown

Image result for navy blue and chocolate brown ugly interior design living room

As a wood trim or a walnut finish, these two colors could possibly make a decent partnership, but it is difficult to pull off. For upholstery, steer far away from navy blue fabrics mixed with chocolate brown fabrics. These colors clash making the entire room look dull and drab. In fact, it can be very difficult finding the right shades that will marry the two colors for a harmonious setting. Ideally, as a rule of thumb, brown fabrics and brown upholstery should be used sparingly.

Too Many Animal Prints

Image result for random animal prints in interior design

Is this the house of a rockstar, the pad of a giglio or were you attempting to add a bit of glam to your space? A well-placed animal skin rug, a leopard print throw blanket accent or a zebra print upholstered chair may serve your space well. However, too many animal prints, whether or not they are the “same” print, will need a designer with a keen eye to orchestrate this properly. It may be possible, but if done wrong, the tackiness is strong.

Cherry Red and Bright Orange

Image result for cherry red and bright orange interior design

Did anyone say “I’m lovin’ it?” Do you want your home to look like a fast-food restaurant or a welcoming sanctuary? These two colors separated can be absolutely stunning, but together – “did anyone want fries with that?”

Black Walls

Related image

You may think the color black will help the colors POP in your living space. Reality is, black walls do nothing but darken the entire atmosphere adding nothing but a grim and glum setting to your living space. They are nearly impossible to make look good unless your Morticia from the Adams Family. Even as a vampiric vixen, you may still have trouble enticing guests to spend the evening.

Decorative Letters and Words

Image result for lettering and labels interior design pillows

We know this may be a trend among some instagram interior designers and other kitschy decor fans. However, lettering everything in your home with catch phrases or labels in “interesting” font is a bit overkill. One or two decals or embroidered pillows may look decent, but when it is overdone, it is tackiness to the fullest. Not only does it become cumbersome to the eyes, but it starts to make us feel like we are living inside of a dictionary come to life.

Now that you know some of the big No-No’s of interior design, you can start your journey towards better choices when designing your next room!

Stay Comfortable Every Night With the Best Cooling Mattress Toppers

Spending your nights tossing and turning, throwing off the covers only to pull them back on and then repeat the whole process? This is a common scenario for people who sleep hot but it doesn’t have to be because a cooling mattress topper can bring relief – and a good night’s sleep.

You already know that a mattress topper can be a game-changer when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, especially on a too-firm or older mattress. It’s possible to get the same benefits with the added cooling feature that many mattress toppers offer. The inability for hot sleepers to get a good night’s rest is biologically based. In fact, science has proven the link between your body temperature and sleeping. The National Sleep Foundation says that the optimum room temperature for sleep is about 65 degrees. Also, the lower your body temperature the easier you can fall asleep and stay asleep. This is why virtually everyone has a hard time sleeping on hot nights without air conditioning!

Adding a cooling mattress topper is just one way for a hot sleeper to get relief and a good night’s sleep. There are all kinds of tips for creating the proper, cool environment that makes sleeping easier.

What is a mattress topper?

Mattress toppers are more than glorified mattress pads. They come in a variety of thicknesses ranging from 4 to 8 inches. While they do help protect mattresses their main purpose is to increase comfort and support for the body.

Memory foam toppers are super popular because they evenly distribute body weight, keeping you comfortable while supporting your body properly. Many people who have back and joint pain love these toppers because they can ease these conditions. Some types of memory foam toppers also have a cooling mechanism – which can be a godsend for people who sleep hot. It doesn’t matter why you are hot when you sleep – a medical condition, hormonal shifts due to menopause, a hot room or climate– cooling mattress toppers can help regulate airflow and draw heat away from the body, helping you sleep more comfortably.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Mattress toppers made from natural and other materials can be a good choice for hot sleepers because they offer more breathability and help keep heat from building up around the body. These include toppers made from wool, cotton, bamboo, and polyester fiberfill,  which are all great for side sleepers in particular because they are a little softer.

Other popular mattress toppers for hot sleepers include those made from gel-infused memory foam that helps with breathability and draws heat away from the body. Memory foam mattress toppers that do not have gel are generally not the best choice for hot sleepers and may make them feel even warmer.

What is Gel-Infused Memory Foam?

Memory foam is a chemically treated polyurethane foam called ‘viscoelastic that is more elastic than regular foam. Because many customers who sleep hot were finding the foam too warm, about a decade ago the gel-infused type was introduced. These toppers are injected with a gel or gel beads.

According to Bed Times Magazine, these toppers are made from memory foam that is infused with gel beads, swirled gels or layers of poured gels. Because gel has a higher density than foam, it doesn’t heat up as quickly. Many of today’s gels are made with beads that incorporate microencapsulated “phase-change materials,” which are “organic and inorganic compounds that store and release heat as they melt and solidify at certain temperatures. It is decades-old technology based on centuries-old thermodynamics research into the nature of ‘latent heat.’”

While these toppers do have cooling properties, it’s not like sleeping on an ice pack and they will not make you cold during the night. They’re made to pull heat away from the body and redistribute it, not generate cold. Most toppers are passive, but it is possible to find electric mattress pads with cooling fans that are rather costly and that must be plugged in to run.

Pros and Cons of Cooling Mattress Toppers

As with any product, there are pluses and minuses. First, it’s important to decide which kind of topper is right for you based on your individual needs and sleeping preferences. If you’re a fan of all-natural materials, then that narrows down the decision right away. Buyers like different products for different reasons, but here are some overall pros and cons of cooling mattress toppers.

Pros:

  • Drifting off made cooler: Cooling mattress toppers are really effective when you first get into bed and need to fall asleep. The inherent airflow and cooling gel help keep the environment at the right temperature for going to sleep.
  • Better overall sleep – Aside from the cooling properties, the other features of a cooling mattress topper can help keep you in a restful state. From a softer surface to more support, a new topper can be sleep-changing.
  • Budget-Conscious: If it’s your mattress keeping you hot at night, adding a cooling topper is far more affordable than buying a new mattress.
  • Less AC usage: For some people, adding a cooling mattress topper to the bed often leads to running the air conditioner less overnight, which saves on energy.

Cons:

  • It’s another layer: Some people have issues with the added layer on the bed. Some types also have a tendency to shift.
  • Not so cool: The degree of cooling ability for some of these products is hotly debated, according to Bed Times Magazine. Some buyers are disappointed by the amount of heat they actually draw from around the sleeping body.
  • Chemicals in the gel foam – Virtually all the gel memory foam mattress toppers have an initial odor that dissipates over the first day or two. People who are sensitive to chemicals or prefer not to introduce many chemicals into their home environment will want to consider only the natural options.

Once you’ve decided that a cooling mattress topper is your ticket to a better night’s sleep you have to decide what kind to get. Here are the best cooling mattress toppers that

Did anyone say “I’m lovin’ it?” Do you want your home to look like a fast-food restaurant or a welcoming sanctuary? These two colors separated can be absolutely stunning, but together – “did anyone want fries with that?”

Black Walls

You may think the color black will help the colors POP in your living space. Reality is, black walls do nothing but darken the entire atmosphere adding nothing but a grim and glum setting to your living space. They are nearly impossible to make look good unless your Morticia from the Adams Family. Even as a vampiric vixen, you may still have trouble enticing guests to spend the evening.

Decorative Letters and Words

We know this may be a trend among some instagram interior designers and other kitschy decor fans. However, lettering everything in your home with catch phrases or labels in “interesting” font is a bit overkill. One or two decals or embroidered pillows may look decent, but when it is overdone, it is tackiness to the fullest. Not only does it become cumbersome to the eyes, but it starts to make us feel like we are living inside of a dictionary come to life.

Now that you know some of the big No-No’s of interior design, you can start your journey towards better choices when designing your next room!

15 Fantastic Christmas Wreath Ideas That Anyone Can Make

Have you displayed your Christmas wreath yet? No worries, there’s still plenty of time left, enough for you to craft something beautiful and special this year. If you don’t have any specific ideas for the design and everything else, that’s ok too because we have some cool ideas to share with you today. Any of these would be a great source of inspiration for your own DIY Christmas wreath project and you can also gather multiple ideas from different projects and put them together to create something unique and original.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

This colorful Christmas wreath is decorated with lots of felt balls, around 300 to be more exact. They’re each about 1” in diameter and they have various different colors. This is not a very simple or fast project, as you’ve probably guessed. However, it’s well worth the effort since it looks so cute and interesting. In addition to all the felt balls you also need a 12” straw wreath, some twine, heavy-duty thread, a large needle and a hot glue gun in order to successfully complete this project. If you choose to use a smaller wreath then you’ll need fewer felt balls and you’ll be able to craft this faster.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

This project uses felt too but in a different way. This is a felt leaf wreath which is considerably easier and faster to do than the felt ball one mentioned earlier. For this project you need felt pieces in various different shades of green, fabric scissors, wire, wire cutters, a needle, embroidery thread and a hot glue gun (optional in case you want to attach ornaments at the end). Even if you choose the simplified design the wreath will still look nice and interesting. Check out the full tutorial in case you need more details.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

This leather-wrapped wreath has a trendy and modern look and seems like a fairly simple project so you might as well have a closer look at it if you like the idea. Here’s what you need if you want to make a similar Christmas wreath: a 14” styrofoam wreath form, leather lacing (3 medium brown ones were used in this case), black leather lacing, green velvet ribbon and floral stems. Most of the wreath is wrapped in brown leather cord which gives it a simple and elegant look. The floral stems and ribbon are clustered in a single spot on one side of the wreath. Check out cherishedbliss in case you need more details.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

This is a Christmas wreath made of lots of little presents. It definitely captures the spirit of the holidays quite nicely and in a fun and quirky manner. Obviously, those are not real presents. They’re just pieces of styrofoam covered in wrapping paper. This can actually be the perfect opportunity to use some of those scrap pieces of wrapping paper you’ve been saving all this time. When you have all the mini presents ready, start attaching them to a flat wreath form. For additional details on this project you can have a look at the tutorial from handmadecharlotte.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

This doesn’t look like any other Christmas wreath so if you’re looking for a unique and unusual way to decorate your front door this could be it. The wreath in this case is more like a decoration, a piece of art. It definitely stands out and looks interesting. In case you’re wondering how it’s made, have a look at the tutorial provided on deliciousanddiy. As a general idea, these are the supplies you’re going to need: wooden stakes, wood stain, glue, faux succulents, bottle brush trees, thick paper, texture paints, glitter and tape.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

The simple Christmas wreaths that you can find at your local stores don’t really stand out in any way but you can change that. A very inspiring transformation was featured on sadieseasongoods. It went from generic Christmas wreath to original winter wreath. The big red bow was removed, the whole wreath got a light coat of white spray paint with a coat of snow flock on top and then the ornaments were added: a handmade wreath (basically a thin knitted scarf) and pair of miniature wooden skis.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Although it’s not really a wreath, you can definitely use it as one. We’re talking about this stylish star decoration featured on thethingsshemakes. It’s a pretty simple and straight-forward project. It starts with a star-shaped wire ornament. If you can’t find any at your local stores, you could try making it front scratch. Take some faux foliage, make a little bundle and put a dab of hot glue to keep everything in place, then wrap some twine around and attach it to the ornament.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Instead of a wreath or a wreath form you can also use embroidery hoops. They’re made of wood which gives the wreath and a subtle rustic look and they’re easy to find and inexpensive. This hoop wreath is decorated with greenery, flowers, pine cones and faux antlers…a rather odd and interesting combination. You can also add a few more ornaments if you want to. Some jingle bells could look nice or a cute bow. In any case, be sure to check out simplydesigning to find out more details about this lovely Christmas project.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Another idea is to paint a Christmas wreath instead of crafting one from greenery and other things. You can make it as big as you want to and give it any design and ornaments that you want. You can also use any instruments you prefer to paint it. We really like the watercolor wreath featured on craftberrybush. It has a nice bohemian look and it’s simple but not without character.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

You might also like the idea of making a JOY Christmas wreath. It’s a fairly popular design which consists of a simple wreath and J and Y letters, either made of wood, cardboard or some other material. They’re put together so that the wreath becomes the O at the center, thus the whole JOY theme. We really like this combo from amber-oliver which uses a white wreath and red wooden letters.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Have you ever made a peacock-themed Christmas wreath? The idea sure sounds interesting. There’s a very inspiring project on danslelakehouse that you should check out. It explains in detail how this gorgeous wreath was made and also how to make embossed velvet leaves which were used here as ornaments. The overall design is unusual but at the same time very intriguing, inspiring and memorable. Even if you skip the peacock feathers the wreath would still look really cool.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

If you like colorful and fluffy things, this pom-pom Christmas wreath should be just what you need. Making all the pom-poms out of yarn in assorted colors is the most time-consuming part of this project but at the same time it’s not difficult so you could definitely do it while watching a movie. Once you have them all you can glue them onto a foam wreath form after you’ve previously wrapped a layer of yarn on it. You can always check out diyinpdx in case you need more details along the way.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Now about a Christmas wreath inspired by nature? Using all-natural materials to make it could turn out difficult but a combination of real and faux items should look very nice. You can find a good dose of inspiration in this project from hearthandvine. It uses faux berries, greenery and dried artichokes as decorations, all attached to a grapevine wreath.  You can add more ornaments like cinnamon sticks, dehydrated oranges and pinecones which should be easy to get.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

There’s also this really beautiful and simple Christmas wreath featured on renovatingmaplesonmanor that we really really like. This one is made using a floral hoop, white berries, twig balls and floral wire. It looks so pure and simple and charming and it’s easy to make too. You can use different types of greenery or flowers if you want to add more color to your design.

Dakotadave.com Home Decor

Another simple wreath but with a more classic design this time can be seen on sisterswhat. It was made from a 14” embroidery hoop wrapped in yarn and decorated with faux pine branches, eucalyptus and mini pine cones. If you want a bit more color you can add a bow or some flowers. You could also choose a different color for the yarn which would change the look of the wreath considerably.
